In 1963, when President John F. Kennedy visited the Gate, East Germany hung huge red banners across it so he couldn't look into East Berlin.

Another official reason East Berlin gave for building the Wall was that West Berliners were supposedly emptying East German stores of state-supplied goods. Again, no one in the West, and hardly anyone in the East, could take that explanation seriously.
